The “seven deadly sins” (also called the capital vices or cardinal sins) come from early Christian teaching, especially developed by church fathers like Evagrius Ponticus and Pope Gregory the Great. They aren’t listed in one place in the Bible but were summarized as a way to understand the root causes of sinful behavior.
Here they are:
Pride – Excessive self-importance, arrogance, or putting oneself above God and others.
Greed (Avarice) – An insatiable desire for wealth, possessions, or power.
Lust – Disordered or excessive desire for sexual pleasure.
Envy – Resentment of another’s blessings, success, or possessions.
Gluttony – Overindulgence, especially in food or drink, but also in other pleasures.
Wrath (Anger) – Uncontrolled hatred, rage, or desire for revenge.
Sloth – Laziness, apathy, or failure to act when action is needed (spiritually or physically).
👉 Each of these is seen as a root sin that leads to many others.
Traditionally, they’re contrasted with the seven heavenly virtues (humility, charity, chastity, gratitude/kindness, temperance, patience, diligence).
